The Diocese of Aveiro, which is hosting the WYD symbols until next April 1st, has joined the world tree-planting challenge launched by the Local Organizing Committee for WYD Lisbon 2023. On World Tree Day, 1,000 trees of native species were planted in an area affected by the fires.
The Diocese of Aveiro joined the world tree-planting challenge launched by the Local Organizing Committee for WYD Lisbon 2023, in partnership with the Global Tree Initiative, and planted 1,000 trees of native species in an area affected by the fires that occurred last year in Canelas, in the municipality of Estarreja.
In an area of 1 hectare, 250 Arbutus unedo trees, 250 cork trees, 250 oak trees, and 250 holly trees were planted. This action was supported by the Estarreja City Hall and Navigator, who offered the trees.
The initiative brought together children and young people from the Estarreja School Group, and several members of the Diocesan Organizing Committee of Aveiro and of the diocesan community, in addition to Bishop D. Américo Aguiar, President of the WYD Lisbon 2023 Foundation, and Bishop D. António Moiteiro, Bishop of Aveiro, who were also present.
The world tree planting challenge was launched by the WYD Local Organizing Committee in December of last year with the aim of alerting for the importance of biodiversity and the fight against climate change, and as a way to offset part of the environmental footprint generated during the August gathering.
According to the organization, there are already over 7,300 trees dedicated to WYD Lisbon 2023, planted in various parts of the world.
