The Miradouro Portal do Sol was the stage where Tambóra animated a concert.
On 4 August, the Tambóra entertained the crowd at the Portas do Sol viewpoint, as part of one of the many initiatives of the Youth Festival promoted by World Youth Day Lisbon 2023 (WYD).
No one was indifferent to the contagious rhythms of this percussion group formed by children and young people from the Fim do Mundo neighbourhood in Estoril.
When they received the invitation to be part of the largest youth gathering in the world, they did not hesitate to accept. “It was an excellent opportunity for the kids,” says Pablo Fortes, coordinator of the Ludoteca of Galicia, an Educational Centre coordinated by the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians. In Tambóra, music is the educational tool that allows the children to work on “fundamental skills such as commitment, sharing and respect”, he adds.
The rehearsal coordinator, Hugo Fonseca, is the one who guides the children during the performances. Using a whistle, he gives the necessary indications to change rhythms or prolong the bars.
The Tambóra were born in 2004. Faced with the lack of musical proposals at the Ludoteca de Galicia, Pablo Fortes began by organising workshops in this area, trying to attract children to percussion. “But in the beginning there was some inertia”, he explains, “and I had to keep encouraging the kids with the expression ‘let’s go’, in the sense of let’s go!”. And it was precisely from this expression that the name of the group was born, combining the words tambor and embora.
