From 20 to 23 October 2022 the 2nd edition of the World Youth Day Global Race will take place worldwide, the virtual race that can be run anywhere, anytime.
To participate, each athlete must register in the app or on the website and pay a symbolic fee of 4 euros. The app – developed by partner Move Sports – has a georeferencing system that will allow recording the time and distance run, as well as a virtual podium where the final classification of all participants can be seen, anywhere in the world.
Participants will also be able to choose the distance they wish to run: two kilometres, five kilometres or 10 kilometres. There will also be a modality available for participants with reduced mobility, as well as the possibility for participants to take the opportunity of the race for plogging.
The purpose of this initiative is to run to offset part of the ecological footprint that World Youth Day Lisbon 2023 will cause. The money raised from the registrations will be used to plant trees as part of reforestation actions. This action of funding and planting trees will happen through a partnership with the Global Tree Initiative (GTI).
