During the week of WYD Lisbon 2023, Lisbon will have two main venues: Parque Eduardo VII and Parque Tejo – where the big moments for young people to meet Pope Francis will take place. These will see their names changed.
The Portuguese capital will, during the week of World Youth Day, welcome, with immense joy, thousands of young people who will spread throughout the city.
Parque Eduardo VII, the place where young people will meet the Pope for the first time, and which welcomed Pope John Paul II in 1982, will be renamed “Meeting Hill”. This name evokes the encounter with the living Christ and the experience of young people who make up the Church that comes to meet everyone. It also recalls the encounter between Mary and Elizabeth, a moment that gives life to the theme of WYD Lisbon 2023, “Mary got up and set out in haste.
Parque Tejo, where all the pilgrims will head in “thanksgiving” to celebrate the Vigil and the Final Mass, will be renamed Campo da Graça (Field of Grace).
For Pope Francis, World Youth Day is “an event of grace that awakens, broadens the horizon, strengthens the aspirations of the heart, helps to dream, and to look beyond”.
