Dioceses in Portugal will receive a replica of the World Youth Day Cross.
With this initiative, the Local Organizing Committee wants to continue the journey until August 2023 and leave a mark in all dioceses where the pilgrimage of the Symbols has already taken place.
D. Américo Aguiar, President of the WYD Lisbon 2023 Foundation, presented the first replica of the WYD Cross to the Bishop of Viseu, Bishop António Luciano dos Santos Costa, and the Diocesan Organizing Committee. The ceremony took place on April 30, the date on which the pilgrimage of the symbols in Viseu ended. The Cross and the icon of Our Lady Salus Populi Romani will be in pilgrimage during the month of May in the Diocese of Funchal.
Américo Aguiar expressed, “May the Mission not end on the last day of the pilgrimage of the WYD symbols through the diocese, but may it always be a beginning? a getting up and setting out”.
All the dioceses where the World Youth Day Symbols have already passed – Algarve, Beja, Évora, Portalegre-Castelo Branco and Guarda – will soon receive their replicas and the remaining dioceses will receive them in the context of their respective pilgrimages of the symbols.
The pilgrimage of the symbols of World Youth Day through 21 Portuguese dioceses began in November 2021 in the Diocese of the Algarve and will end in July next year in Lisbon.
